How to tell sugilite from amethyst

1. Hold it to a lamp. Amethyst glows violet because light passes through; sugilite stays solid and only the edges may glow.
2. Look for veins. Darker veins, patches and bits of matrix point to sugilite. Amethyst shows lighter and darker violet zones, small inclusions and sometimes white quartz areas.
3. Look for blue. Sugilite often shifts toward deep blue-purple or near-black midnight blue. Amethyst stays in the lilac-to-grape range.
4. Check the price. Sugilite is relatively rare, so a large-bead strand sold very cheaply is a warning sign.
