How can you tell if a sugilite necklace is real?

Natural sugilite is opaque to slightly translucent, with uneven purple tones, darker veins or patches and some matrix. Dyed stone pools color at drill holes or cracks. Glass or resin looks too even, feels light or warms fast, or has bubbles. Sugilite is fairly rare, so a very cheap price is a warning sign.

1. Look for uneven color. Natural sugilite shows several purple tones in one strand, with darker veins, patches and some matrix. Every bead looks a little different.
2. Check the drill holes and cracks. Dye pools where it can enter: a darker ring around the drill hole or colored lines along cracks point to dyed stone.
3. Feel the weight and temperature. Natural stone feels solid and cool at first. Glass and resin imitations can feel light or warm quickly.
4. Look for bubbles. Round bubbles inside a bead are a sign of glass or resin.
5. Be wary of a very low price. Sugilite is a relatively rare stone, so a large-bead strand sold very cheaply is a warning sign.

How do I cleanse and care for a sugilite necklace?

Cleanse sugilite with moonlight, sound, smoke or selenite rather than salt water. Avoid long, strong sun, hard knocks and chemicals such as perfume, lotion and chlorine. Store it alone in its pouch, and take it off before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping to protect the stones and the cord.

• Sound: Ring a singing bowl, bell or chime near the necklace for a minute.
• Smoke: Pass it gently through the smoke of sage, palo santo or incense.
• Selenite: Rest it on a selenite plate or charging bowl overnight.

Everyday care:

• Skip salt water. Salt can dull polished stone and wears down the cord.
• Avoid long, strong sun. Strong light over time can soften deep purple tones.
• Avoid hard knocks. Take it off before sports or heavy work.
• Keep it away from chemicals: perfume, lotion, cleaning products and chlorine.
• Store it on its own in its pouch so harder stones and jewelry don't scratch it.
• Take it off before showering, swimming, exercising and sleeping. Heat, soap, chlorine and sweat wear down elastic cord over time.
