What is Hetian jade?

Hetian jade (和田玉) is nephrite jade, treasured in China for thousands of years for its fine texture and soft, oily luster. It is named after the Hotan (和田) region of Xinjiang. Nephrite and jadeite are different minerals: Hetian pieces are soft jade (软玉); jadeite is the hard jade usually sold as 翡翠.

Traditional meaning and energy

In Chinese tradition jade stands for peace and safety (平安), gentle, warm protection (温润守护) and a settled, steady heart (心定). In crystal tradition, soft pink Hetian jade is linked with the heart chakra; green strands share the same cultural meanings of peace, warm protection and a calm everyday companion.

How to tell if Hetian jade is real

Natural Hetian jade feels dense, cool and surprisingly heavy for its size, with a soft, oily luster rather than a glassy shine. Under a strong light you'll see a fine, cotton-like fibrous texture that differs from bead to bead. Glass looks too clear and shows round bubbles. Care

Nephrite jade is tough, and in Chinese tradition it grows more lustrous the more it's worn. Still, avoid hard knocks and harsh chemicals. Cleanse it with moonlight or sound, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and store it on its own in its pouch, away from strong heat.
