What's the difference between amethyst and citrine?

Both are quartz colored by iron. Amethyst is the violet form; citrine is the yellow to orange form. Heat changes the state of that iron, turning violet to yellow or orange, and a lot of citrine on the market is heated amethyst. Heated citrine is still real quartz, not a fake, but you can't tell by eye whether a bead formed yellow or was heated, and a seller who promises an answer either way without a lab test is guessing. That's why we describe our citrine only by what you can see in the photos: bead size, color range, clarity and accents. If a lab report matters to you, ask us before ordering through our contact page. More in Citrine Meaning: Real vs Heat-Treated.

If you want both colors in one stone, that's ametrine.

Energy in tradition

In crystal tradition, amethyst's violet is linked with the crown and third eye chakras, the centers of intuition, wisdom and a quiet mind. It symbolises calm focus and quiet evenings, and it is a protective stone, a guardian of devoted love, a stone of wisdom and a symbol of rising good fortune.

In crystal tradition, citrine is linked with the solar plexus chakra, the center of confidence, willpower and personal power. It's a reminder of abundance, steady income, new opportunities, helpful people and manifesting goals. These are traditional meanings, not medical or financial advice, and no crystal can promise results.

Worn together, the pairing reads as calm and clear thinking alongside abundance and new opportunities. More on each stone: Amethyst Meaning & Which Wrist.

Crystal meanings come from tradition and personal experience. They are not a substitute for medical, financial or professional advice.

How to wear amethyst and citrine together

  1. One strand with both: our 11mm amethyst bracelet is strung with one large Brazilian citrine bead.
  2. Stack two bracelets: pair a slim amethyst multi-wrap with a single-wrap citrine, or the other way round. Different bead sizes keep the stack from looking crowded. See how to wear a multi-wrap bracelet.
  3. Both colors in one crystal: ametrine, as a 9.5mm bracelet with a carved amethyst fox or a 7.3mm 108-bead mala necklace.

Which wrist?

Wear amethyst on your left to welcome in calm, clarity and gentle energy. Wear it on your right when you want to make a little space for yourself at the end of the day.

In crystal tradition, wear citrine on your left wrist to welcome wealth, opportunities and helpful people, and on your right to put plans into action.

Wearing both on the same wrist is fine. There's no wrong answer: choose the side that matches your main intention.

Care

Both are quartz, about 7 on the Mohs scale, so they can be worn and stored together. Keep both out of long, strong sun, which can slowly fade the purple and the yellow. Store each bracelet in its pouch, keep them from perfume, lotion and chlorine, and take them off before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping to protect the cord. See our crystal bracelet care guide and how to cleanse a crystal bracelet.

Frequently asked questions

Can amethyst and citrine be worn together?

Yes. Both are quartz, so they wear and age the same way, and violet with golden yellow is a classic pairing. You can wear one strand that has both, stack an amethyst bracelet with a citrine one, or choose ametrine, which holds both colors in one crystal.

What do amethyst and citrine mean together?

In crystal tradition, amethyst stands for calm, wisdom, devoted love and rising good fortune, and citrine for abundance, new opportunities and helpful people. Worn together, the pairing reads as calm and clear thinking alongside abundance and new opportunities. This is traditional meaning, not medical or financial advice.

Is citrine just heated amethyst?

Some is. Both are quartz colored by iron, and heat can turn amethyst yellow or orange; heating is very common in the citrine trade, and heated citrine is still real quartz. You can't tell by eye which beads formed yellow, so we describe our citrine only by what you can see in the photos.

Which wrist should I wear amethyst and citrine on?

In crystal tradition, the left wrist is the receiving side and the right is the giving or releasing side. Wear amethyst on your left to welcome in calm, clarity and gentle energy; wear citrine on your left to welcome wealth, opportunities and helpful people, or on your right to put plans into action. There's no wrong answer.
