Real lapis lazuli shows a deep, opaque royal blue with natural pyrite flecks and sometimes white calcite veins. Dyed howlite or sodalite looks evenly blue without a pyrite sparkle, or shows dye in drill holes. Our lapis ships from Jiangsu, China, with real studio photos of the exact piece.

1. Look for pyrite flecks: Natural lapis often shows tiny metallic pyrite spots. Perfectly even blue with no flecks can be dyed stone.
2. Expect opacity: Lapis is opaque, not glassy-clear. Glass imitations look too translucent.
3. Check drill holes: Dye collects as a darker ring around the hole; natural color stays even at the hole.
4. Expect variety: Shade and flecking differ from bead to bead.

How do I cleanse and care for lapis lazuli?

Lapis lazuli is softer than quartz and can be sensitive to chemicals and long water soaks, so wipe it with a soft dry cloth and keep it from perfume, lotion and chlorine. Cleanse it with moonlight, sound or selenite, store it on its own in its pouch, and take it off before showering, swimming or sleeping.

Energy cleansing (pick what feels right):

• Moonlight: Leave it on a windowsill overnight.
• Sound: Ring a singing bowl, bell or chime near it for a minute.
• Selenite: Rest it on a selenite plate overnight.
