What does kyanite mean?

Kyanite is a blue mineral that grows in long, blade-like crystals, so its beads show streaks of deep and pale blue with a soft silky sheen. In crystal tradition it's a stone of balance and a clear heart, linked with a relaxed mood and clear thinking.

Its name comes from the Greek kyanos, "deep blue". Kyanite has a rare trait: it is harder along one direction than the other, which is why it splits easily along its grain and needs gentle handling.

Real kyanite shows streaks and bands of blue running along each bead, a silky sheen that moves as you turn it, and color that varies from deep blue to almost white. Dyed glass or quartz looks evenly blue. Our kyanite ships from Jiangsu, China, with real studio photos.

1. Look for streaks: Natural kyanite's blades show as parallel blue streaks, never perfectly even color.
2. Turn it in the light: A soft silky or cat's-eye-like sheen moves across natural kyanite beads.
3. Expect variety: Shade and streaking differ from bead to bead. A strand where every bead matches is a warning sign.
4. Check the drill holes: Dye collects in drill holes and cracks; a darker ring around the hole is a classic trace of dyed stone.

How do I cleanse and care for kyanite?

Kyanite splits easily along its grain, so avoid knocks and drops, and take it off for sports and heavy work. Cleanse it with moonlight or sound, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, store it on its own in its pouch, and keep it away from perfume, lotion and chlorine.

Unworn items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days; the customer pays return postage.
