Opal forms from silica-rich water that settles into tiny spheres. Where the spheres line up evenly, they split light into rainbow flashes, which is why no two opal beads show the same colors.

This piece is a beaded necklace of 4.7mm opal beads in milky white and clear with flashes of rainbow colour, finished with small turquoise-blue round beads, small pale yellow round beads, a ribbed vintage-style round bead and a vintage-style clasp with an extender chain.

How can you tell if an opal necklace is real?

Turn a bead slowly under one light. Natural opal shows irregular patches of color that shift and differ from bead to bead; imitations often repeat one neat pattern or look the same from every angle. Our opal ships from Jiangsu, China, with real studio photos of the exact piece.

1. Tilt test: Natural play of color moves in patches as the angle changes, and some beads flash more than others.
2. Look for variety: No two natural opal beads match exactly. A strand where every bead looks identical is a warning sign.
3. Check the pattern under magnification: Natural opal shows soft, irregular color patches. Some lab-made opal shows a tight, scale-like or columnar pattern.
4. Feel and weight: Opal is lighter than most gemstones but still feels cool and solid; plastic looks lighter and warms up quickly.

How do I care for an opal necklace?

Opal holds a little water inside its structure, so keep it away from heat, strong sun and very dry air, and protect it from knocks. Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth, store it on its own in its pouch, and skip ultrasonic cleaners, salt water and harsh chemicals.

Energy cleansing (gentle options):

• Moonlight: Leave it on a windowsill overnight, out of direct sun.
• Sound: Ring a singing bowl, bell or chime near it for a minute.

Everyday care:

• Avoid heat and drying: No hot cars, radiators or long, strong sun; sudden temperature changes can crack or craze opal.
• Avoid knocks: Opal is softer than quartz, so take it off for sports and heavy work.
• Store it on its own in its pouch so harder stones can't scratch it.
• Keep it from chemicals: perfume, lotion, cleaners and chlorine.

US shipping is free on orders of $99 or more; otherwise it's a flat $8.99. Orders are processed in 1–3 business days and ship from Jiangsu, China with tracking, arriving in about 7–15 business days. Unworn items in their original packaging can be returned within 30 days; the customer pays return postage.
