What does southern red agate mean?

Southern red agate (南红, nan hong) is a warm, opaque red agate from southwest China, prized there for centuries. In crystal tradition it's called the lover's stone, and it's linked with a calm, peaceful mood, with relaxation and with the sign of Cancer.

Its red comes from fine iron minerals in the agate, so the color runs from persimmon orange to deep cherry red, and no two beads match exactly. In Chinese tradition red is the color of good fortune and celebration.

How to care for southern red agate

Southern red agate is a fairly hard stone, but its glow lasts longest when it's kept away from perfume, lotion and harsh cleaners. Cleanse it with moonlight or sound, wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and store it on its own in its pouch.

• Moonlight: Leave it on a windowsill overnight, out of direct sun.
• Sound: Ring a singing bowl, bell or chime near it for a minute.
• Put it on last: Apply perfume, lotion and sunscreen first and let them dry.
• Take it off before showering, swimming, exercising or sleeping to protect the stone and the cord.
