To tell if an aquamarine bracelet is real, look for gentle color zoning between deeper blue, ice-blue and teal, and turn each bead to see its color shift. Inside, fine lines or rain-like wisps are normal, while round bubbles point to glass, and dark blue rings at the drill holes suggest dyed stone.

1. Look for color zoning. Real aquamarine rarely has one perfectly flat color. Look for gentle shifts between deeper blue, lighter ice-blue and teal areas.
2. Turn the bead. Aquamarine can look slightly different in color, bluer or more colorless, when viewed from different angles.
3. Look for natural inclusions. Fine lines, wisps or tiny "rain-like" inclusions inside the bead are normal in natural aquamarine. Glass tends to look too clean or show round air bubbles.
4. Check drill holes and cracks. Aquamarine imitations are often quartz or chalcedony dyed blue, and dye can only enter through openings, so it collects in drill holes and cracks as darker blue rings or lines.
5. Feel the temperature. Crystalline stone draws heat away from your skin faster than glass, and far faster than resin, so a natural bead stays cool for longer. A bead that turns warm almost at once is more likely resin or plastic. Use this only as a supporting clue, since glass can also feel cool at first.
6. Use a loupe or your phone's macro mode. Under 10x magnification, natural stone shows irregular inclusions, from fine lines to cotton-like clouds, sitting at different depths inside the bead.
7. Weigh it in your hand. A strand of natural stone feels solid and substantial; plastic and resin look-alikes feel noticeably light.
